Top Bald Head Island Attractions & Activities

Bald Head Island is home to the most laid-back beaches in the area, but there’s plenty to do, no matter how long your stay.

Old Baldy Lighthouse

If you’re visiting Bald Head Island, Old Baldy Lighthouse is a must-see. Built in 1817, it’s North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse. With just 108 steps to the top, it’s easy access to a full panoramic view of the entire island, the Cape Fear River and beyond! While you’re there, be sure to visit the Smith Island Museum of History, connected to the lighthouse gift shop. This museum gives you a glimpse into life on the island over the years and the history of the lower Cape Fear River.

Mitchell Kent Nature Trail

Don’t worry, hikers: we’ve got you covered, too. Mitchell Kent Nature Trail offers a more scenic view of the island and a closer look at maritime nature and wildlife. This trail offers easy-to-moderate hiking paths that lead you through the woods beneath an enchanting canopy of trees. This is a great way to explore the expanse of preserved maritime forest located at the heart of the island.

Bald Head Island Conservancy

The Bald Head Island Conservancy offers more chances for you to explore and appreciate our beautiful local ecosystem. Focused on protecting the island, the BHI Conservancy helps keep the island pristine for future generations while providing activities like the Sea Turtle Protection Program summer turtle walks. They’re also your go-to option for crabbing, kayaking in the creeks and birdwatching. Bald Head Island is home to the northern edge of breeding grounds for Painted Buntings, so it’s not uncommon to see pairs enjoying the island!

Island Retreat and Spa

Need to focus on rest and relaxation? We’ve got plenty of self-care options waiting for you. The Island Retreat and Spa is the perfect place to unwind with a massage, nails or facial treatment. They also offer yoga classes, for when you need a little extra zen.

Beautiful Beaches

Of course, we can’t forget to highlight BHI’s fantastic beaches. With over 14 Miles of pristine beaches, you can find the perfect spot for your family beach day. East Beach faces the Atlantic Ocean for slightly better waves, while South Beach has slightly calmer waters, which is great for younger families. Unlike the crowds found on most NC beaches, Bald Head Island offers plenty of space to enjoy your beach day without other beachgoers setting up next to you.

On the Water: Maritime Adventure & Recreation

Bald Head Island offers many opportunities for outdoor adventures, from paddling the creeks in a kayak to surf fishing or fishing charters. Additionally, the Bald Head Island Club is home to a world-class 18-hole golf course designed around the beauty of BHI. Even golfing brings chances to interact with the local ecosystem: you never know when you might cross paths with an alligator on the green or spot egrets, deer or fox darting across the fairway. The Bald Head Island Club also boasts tennis, pickleball and an award-winning croquet court.

Local Spots to Eat and Shop

When planning your BHI visit, don’t miss out on our local businesses! We’ve got plenty of incredible restaurants and shopping when you need a break from the beach. Just drop by on your golf cart and explore.

  • The Maritime Market is the only grocery store on the island. It features an impressive wine selection, grab-and-go bites, a full deli, a wood-fired pizza oven, a walk-up Asian-inspired selection and even an ice cream shop.
  • In the harbor, look no further than Jules’ Salty Grub & Island Pub for great views, drinks and food. Their seasonal sushi bar is highly sought out each summer. If you’re on Bald Head on a Friday, you can’t miss their karaoke night!
  • Cozumel is the perfect spot to enjoy chips and your choice of Mexican cuisine. It’s the home of the largest margarita on the island, too!
  • Over on East Beach is crowd-pleasing Mike’s Bites. Their quick service and tasty food are second only to their Italian ice.
  • There are several great places to shop around the island. Bald Head Blues, Coastal Urge, Island Passage and Monkee’s of Bald Head Island are the top spots for clothing, swimsuits and accessories.
  • Need a souvenir? Room Service is a great shop to pop in for gifts, home decor and more.
  • The Bald Head Island Conservancy has a great gift shop featuring items perfect for kids and curious explorers.

Need A Moment of Quiet?

The island’s most peaceful spot is the village chapel, located next to the lighthouse and overlooking the marshes. The chapel is a great location to reflect and meditate on your island adventures. You can watch the sunrise out on East Beach, or catch the best view of the sunset from beach access #2 in the harbor.
