The Rise of the LSV
Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs) are becoming increasingly popular in Cary, NC, and the whole Triangle area as part of a greater shift towards the easy going lifestyle. Many people are now using these to commute to the pool, neighborhoods, work, store, beach, you name it! A problem in the industry is that often people use the term LSV and golf cart interchangeably, leading to confusion and issues with expectation. With this post, we hope to give you a better understanding of what a LSV is and how it differs from a standard golf car so you can decide if it’s the right option for you.
What is a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV)?
A LSV is a legal class of four-wheeled vehicle that has a maximum speed of 25mph and a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 3,000 lbs. Unlike golf carts, LSVs are federally regulated and must be equipped with specific safety features for road use.
Speed range: 20-25MPH
Regulation: FMVSS standard No. 500.
Road Access: Permitted on roads with speed limits up to 35 MPH
LSV vs. Golf Cart: Key Differences
Speed: Golf carts usually cap at 15–19 mph; LSVs hit 25 mph.
Safety Requirements:
- Deluxe Light Kit
- License Plate Light
- Windshields (AS1 or AS5 treated) with windshield wiper
- Seatbelts for all seats
- Vin number and paperwork for DMV
Road Access: They can be driven on roads with a 35 MPH speed limit or less
Why Buy an LSV?
A LSV is a lot of fun to drive around town or the neighborhood, it lets you have fun even while you are driving to the store. The many different LSV’s that are offered typically are low maintenance and electric meaning lower cost compared to cars. They are very convenient, letting you snag that small parking place a cart wouldn’t fit! Purchasing a LSV versus a golf cart often depends on your planned use for the vehicle to get the benefit versus a standard golf car.
Legality and Licensing: What You Need to Drive
The best way to think about a LSV is the same as your vehicle when it comes to driving and regulations. You need a valid driver’s license to drive. You will need valid tags and insurance similar to your car. All of the same rules of the road still apply to you when you are driving an LSV.
